"The Best Laid Plans . . ."

You know that old saying from Steinbeck? That the best laid plans of mice and men often go astray? Well, the best laid plans of Moms and kids out of school ALSO do the same thing!! Especially when a nice, balmy, 75 degree day suddenly drops about 15 degrees and becomes very yucky and rainy!

So, we arrived at the park yesterday with picnic goodies in hand, ready to slide on slides and read in the sunshine. After about 5 minutes there, Delaney said "I didn't know it was this much cooler" and the rain swooped in. We valiantly tried to enjoy the play area, but instead huddled in despair (well, maybe not that bad . . .but see the picture above? That's Scout and I huddling from the cold, and Delaney in the background getting anxious and ready to go.)

So . . . yep, our best laid plans were changed. The rain came in HARD and I didn't want to drive anywhere. So, no trip to the Civil Rights museum, and no fun at the park. We drove home in bad moods, me especially as I kept telling McKenna, "Don't ask me about going anywhere (she's ALL about going places!) and telling Scout, "I'm tired of the whining (she likes to do that these days!). But, once home, I realized that the day really didn't need to turn into a pout-fest and bad mood-circus. They were home from school for the day, after all, so let's make it into SOMETHING. So... our floor became the picnic area (Scout excitedly carried the chips and drinks to the blanket: "I making a picnic.") we put in "Akeelah and the Bee" since I hadn't seen it and the girls and Gary kept telling me I HAD to see it because it was so good (and it was--just an AWESOME, AWESOME movie if you haven't seen it!).

So . . . the day was not a waste. Just a different sort of fun!

That afternoon Delaney got on my blog to check out my pictures of her room and decided that it really didn't look the way it needed to. She went to arrange it better, she said, and then wanted me to take new pictures of it. So, the first picture is the entire room as she wants it (I have to say that she did do a better job at it than me) and then the last two are of her disco ball in action (she loves it going in her room!). Of it by itself in the middle of the room, and then of she and Scout trying out their dance moves with it!

Now, today is my regular Random Tuesday and I had some plans for it this morning that were pretty cool. BUT, I didn't really get up early enough to do it today ....so, you know that whole things about best laid plans?? Yep, I'm using that line again and going with an alternate plan (will pull out the other plan next Tuesday instead!).

This morning, let me just share three things that are making me happy right now. And why don't you share the same with me and us . . .

1) McKenna telling me, "Thanks for the dinner, Mom. It was really good." She's told me that the last two nights I put dinner on the table. Nice!

2) Watching college basketball.

3) Sweet tea.

Talk with you soon!!!

Hey, can I move into Delaney's room? (even though I'm 40 years old!)
I love the wholechange of plans. Good moves, Mom!

It makes me feel reeeeeeally old when I realize that disco is retro now! That's the era that my older kids lived in! sighhh.

Your indoor picnic was fun. I remember doing that kind of quick thinking when my own were young. But I'm with Gareth on that 60 degree thing! You Southerners are just soft!! ;-) When I rose this morning, it was 12 degrees! But then I like cooler weather anyway, so I will hush. Besides, if my daughter, who lives in FL, should read this, she will get me for teasing you.

Have a good week.

That is great that you had a picnic in your house. We do that every once in awhile.

1.getting ready to paint the bathroom
2. dinner with friends last night
3. an extra day with the boys (no school again b/c of the ice!)

Happy things:
1) It feels like January again. The temp has dropped from 51 degrees this morning at 5 to currently 35. Yay!
2) It's only a four day work week.
3) I finished a short story over the weekend that I plan on submitting to an anthology (it's due 2/1, so I've got some time left over for minor tweaking even).

Umm I don't want to hear it!! I woke up today to Ice, Snow, and a high of 11 degrees!!! :) I would die for your cold right haha.

Boilers have a tough one tomorrow, and probably a long one with #3 Wisconsin AT wisconsin, we're fighting for our NCAA lives

GO BAMA!

How beautiful! I hate to hear about the rain, though-- sounds like ya'll had a great day planned. If it's any comfort, we had some colder, nasty weather up this way, too! :0(

Cheryl Wray said...

Greta--I knew that YOU would love the green and pink!
Missy--Yes, sweet iced tea is like a drink for the gods! The one thing I really don't lik eabout traveling out of the South is that I get funny looks when I ask for sweet tea. I had a sweet waitress in Chicago just look at me and laugh and say, "You're either from Georgia or Alabama."
Scrapperj--Well, we survived indoors!
Phats- LOL on my complaining about the weather. To make you feel better, it's truly COLD out there tonight. Like hovering around freezing! So, ugh!! Ooh, Wisconsin is really looking good but maybe you can pull an upset. Wonder if it will be on tv?
Miss--Sounds like EVERYONE is just having awful weather! yuck!

Again - that room is really cool!
Glad you were able to make the best out of the situation and picnic at home instead!

My 3 things:
1. The Patriots won on Sat
2. Kayla went to school today - I've been sick since Sat so her being in school so I could go back to bed really helped. I needed the extra rest!
3. My grandma called yesterday and that was a nice surprise.

It is really cold here...had a little snow on the grass.
You know, the sweetest memories are made when plans go astray! Like your picnic on the carpet! The kids will remember that...they really will.
Delaney's room really is cool, even before she re arranged it!
Stay warm!
Hugs,
Sue
