Lessons Learned
(And...oh yeah... a story about super powers!)
We had a very busy and tiring weekend, and while it wasn't the best in the world it taught me some very valuable lessons!
First off, though, the GOOD news--
1-- McKenna made her high school Color Guard! She is VERY excited and so are we! (She will be one of the "flag girls" that performs with the band, but it seems quite different from what we had back in school. These days, they also do dance and also perform in competitions.) I am very proud of her!
2-- Delaney's team made it to the championship game and came in 2nd place in their tournament. There were 21 teams from Alabama, Tennesee, Georgia, and Kentucky in the tournament; there were 3 pools of 7 teams each and we came in first place in our pool and then went on to be 2nd overall. So, it was very impressive for the team to do so well!
I said, though, that it wasn't the best weekend in the world and I guess I should clarify that a little bit. I am not a petty person whatsoever and I don't like to talk bad about other people, so I will keep this short and sweet. Let's just say that Delaney got VERY little actual playing time and it was done in a very ugly way. (I'm NOT one of those parents who complains about playing time and I adhere to the team rules to not complain during games. I realize that there are other girls who are as good as my daughter!) But... it made me very sad for Delaney. (And as Forrest Gump would say... "That's all I gotta say about it.")
But... the experience taught me something I knew all along: My daughter is an amazing young lady!! She had such a wonderful attitude through it all! Even after we gave her the option to leave on Sunday she said to us, "I gotta be here for the team!" And she stood in that dugout and cheered for everyone else! And when she finally got to play, she made the most of it! (scoring the first point in the championship game!)
I have always taught her to stick with her obligations, to show class, and to remember that Character (the way she handles herself!) is ALWAYS the most important thing! (That was Lesson One learned this past weekend!)
We adults could learn something from her, couldn't we? I know that I could!
(Btw, this team she was on is totally separate from the regular travel team she's on. She has a different coach with her regular team and she will get to be with him again this next weekend at a tournament. So, we know it will be better this next week! Thank goodness~)
A fave pic from the weekend, of M and S hanging out at the ballpark and supporting their sister. McKenna was so great with Sydney all weekend, taking her down to the playgrond and playing with her. I've got GOOD girls!
Another Lesson Learned is one I knew all along and that is this--There is Joy in the Journey! I mean this in the "big" way (that we learn so much as we trudge along in life--even from the bad things), but I also mean it in the "little" way (that you can have a lot of fun going somewhere you've never been before and just wandering around to explore!).
While waiting for games to start (Delaney and Gary always had to be there earlier than we did), McKenna and Sydney and I did some exploring and we found some fun things! We always look for scrapbook stores and bookstores when we go to a new town. We didn't find a scrapbook store (Gary is glad for this! ha!), but we did find an awesome used book store that was beyond fun!! And I found a book for Sydney that just made me HAPPY. It was one of my favorite books as a child; I have vivide memories of my Dad reading it to me and a very worn, torn copy still resides at my parents' house. But I found a copy with this book in it, as well as three other "Ziggy" stories. The young woman manning the cashier at the bookstore looked a little bit scared when I jumped up and down and squealed, "This was one of my favorite books as a kid. I'm SO excited!!"
We also discovered a really great little cafe (with the yummiest panninis!!) and found a Race Trac gas station that absolutely had 20 different flavors of Icees (and you all know how crazy I am about Icees!! LOL)
And, finally, I need to share one more Lesson Learned from this past weekend and it's actually related to something I mentioned Friday in my post (Rene, this is for you especially! lol). I mentioned that Sydney has been telling all about our superpowers and let's just say that EVERYONE at the ballpark heard about it over the weekend. Everytime I turned around, she was telling someone new about How her family all had superpowers.
Where she got this from, I do not know! (Maybe from "Heroes," or from "The Incredibles"...or , I don't know!! All I do know is that this child needs to have a permanent stage in our house just to perform and entertain us all!)
Anyway..she told anyone who would listen about our superpowers. Apparently it goes something like this:
* Delaney can see through things and also jump up high to catch balls.
* Gary is super-strong.
* McKenna can twirl flags and through them up in the air (we tried to clarify if she used the flags as weapons to knock down bad guys, but she said it's only to look pretty!)
* I, apparently, can fly!
* And she herself can lift heavy things and run really fast!!
(And, oh, she told me that we are dressing up as these Superheroes for Halloween next year. Nothing like planning ahead!)
There you have it... the adventures of the Super Ws this past weekend. LOL!!!!
And for this week, the super family will be busy again--
Flying Mom will teach a Scrapbook class tomorrow night and try and get a few stories written and submitted.
Flag Twirler and X-Ray Vision Girl will have softball games, golf practice, field trips, and homework.
Super Strong Pop will have work, coaching, and some time to watch "Lost" in there sometime!
And Super Swifty Scout will continue to entertain us, I'm sure!!
(And you all will get to hear about it!)

i think it is not only a credit to her character, but to you as parents for teaching her the better things in life!
You guys are super-heroes! In Scout's eyes and many others as well. I am sure that the example that Delany set will pay off tremendously in so many ways! Have fun teaching your class..wish I could be there. I need to email you about maybe getting together this weekend. We'll be heading that way for NSD!
Cheryl, sorry to hear about Delaney and the ASA team. I would say that this was such an exceptional, and SUCCESSful test of her character. What a testimony and especially at her age. Being the superstar is a tough place to be at times, but being on the bench is worse. Looking back, I can remember teamates that I played with in college (HUGE TIME COMMITMENT) and NEVER saw the court. AMAZING...because they ran the sprints, they endured the road trips, they had to abide by the strict schedules and rules of the team, but for what? For us that played, well, we did it for a reason; for the team, but for our playing time. I've often wondered if I would have stuck with athletics for the team, if I didn't have the talent. Wow, what a learning experience she's had. Go Delaney! This is Amanda, I can't seem to post on here with my google account. UGH!
Yeah, yeah, morals, character, awesome, yadda, yadda yadda. BUT WHAT FLAVOR ICEE DID YOU CHOOSE???? 20 FLAVORS OF ICEES AND YOU'RE NOT STILL THERE TRYING TO DECIDE??? Awesome post!! Ryan
i have to say good for you on the daughter play time thing i was palying in a chruch league couple of years back would never play again with them i would rather play in a bar league no swearing and alot more fair no cheaters either lol!!! bad bad me lol!! again i have my reasons lol!!
you are bringing up an exceptional young lady and good for her to have that kinda attitude cause rest assured i WOULDN"T ..lol
We can truly learn a lot from our kids!! But they are a direct reflection of you!!!!
Linda--Being a parent is not always easy, that's for sure!! But you feel so rewarded when your child acts the way you've always raised her to act!
Telah---Ooh, I hope you get to come down this next week! I will be in Anniston for a tourney for part of Saturday, but if we can find a time to meet up I can work my schedule!!
Amanda--You know, I never really thought about all the college players who have toend up sitting the bench. There is a lot of character in doing that, isn't there? Very impressive!
Ryan--HA!!!!! yep, Icees really were the big story of the weekend!! Oh my goodness, the choices!!! In addition to the Icee flavors, they also had a milkshake machine with like 10 flavors and 2 frozen cappucinos. I had Frozen Mocha one time and then tried a White Cherry one time. Delaney, who loves an Icee as much as I do, had a mix of watermelon and blueberry. Yummy!!!!
Stacy--Omg!! That is awful, and kinda funny too! Thta a church league would be so awful! yikes!!
Greta--You got it!! She showed the adults how to act, because believe me the parents did not want to behave!! lol
Adrienne--It's wild how much they are watching and learning from us! Makes me realize I gotta be careful!!
Great post!!!
Thanks for the super family update. Love that! And, what's so crazy about figuring out what you'll be for Halloween so soon??? I've been running ideas through my own mind for at least a month... =) Tell Miss Super Scout that I'm open for ideas!!!
Sounds like a good weekend overall. Glad to hear that McKenna made color guard and that Delaney's team did so well... and that she got the first point in the championship game! That will teach them to cut her playing time!
More to the point, kudos to you for handling that situation well and to Delaney to really rising to the occassion to support her team by staying.
I see a lot of parents and coaches interacting with kids at the rink and it's amazing to me some of the things that go on there all in an effort to bring home a win -- not necessiarly to build skill, character or sportsmanship or even to just have fun, but just to win. It's very distressing. I'm glad she's back with her regular coach next week, but that it also sounds like she learned a good life lesson too about suporting your team and keeping your cool. Good job on raising such an excellent daughter!
Congrats to McKenna. I knew she would make the Color Guard. Now mom comes the memories. Watching the band play in the cold cold weather. Boy do I miss it!!
My daughter was also in softball and some things just don't seem fair. I am proud of Delaney. What a team player. Good job mom and dad.
Take care,
Love,
Terri
I always think that it's good to be dropped or used in a minimal way in team sports because when your next opportunity comes around to play you will be refreshed and ready to show the coach what you can do 200%. Of course it can go the other way and you can try a little tooooo hard but Delaney has her head screwed on very tight and wont let that get to her :)
Congrats to McKenna on making color guard and to Delaney for her team making it to the championship game! She sounds like a very level-headed young lady with a great head on her shoulders!
I saw your post over on our site just now... I hope you enjoyed superhero creation. If it weren't such a long process, I'd encourage you to sit down with Scout and create ones for all five of you since you all have superpowers :) I hope you'll create at least one at post it.
Wow, you learned a lot!My sister was really into color guard in high school--how nice for your daughter. You are right--there is joy in the journey--I try to remember that every day. Enjoyed reading.
congrats on making the team good luck on softball!
What a wonderful weekend. And all the lessons learned! Finding your childhood book at the used bookstore sounded like a real treat. It's always nice to introduce our children to a piece of our childhood. I think it gives them more insight into "parents" as people. What a great experience you all had this weekend.
I read the facts-- thanks!
Blessings,
Adriann
I totally LOVE this post! Thanks so much for sharing your weekend Cheryl. You really do have a great family...and apparently with super powers and everything! LOL!
Love this post, Cheryl! You always make me smile!!
I was a flag girl too and I loved it!
