Art is Fun!
(especially when three-year-olds are involved!)

We had a really fun time at the Birmingham Art Museum this afternoon and before I posted my Going Away to the Beach Post, I wanted to put a few pictures here from our visit.

(Going to an art museum is one of the 20 things on my Summer To Do list, and I can already tell how fun it's going to be to do my little scrapbook on the 20 things. Good memories!)

The Birmingham Museum is not really big, but it has some beautiful pieces. I like to expose my girls to any "culture" we can get and this was the first time Scout had been to this museum. And let's just say that there are some insights about art and museums she taught me--

* Looking at painting after painting is not really appealing to her, but put her in a children-friendly, hands-on Indian village and she is all about that!

* Three-year-olds notice naked people! I don't know how many times she said, in a not-too-quiet-voice, "She's naked," "She's naked," "He's naked." And, oh, eleven-year-olds kinda think it's gross too, but after I tried to explain why so many nudes are painted and the beauty you can find in them, Delaney calmed down a bit about it.

So some pictures...

(yep, that was Monet's signature, and then the girls trying their hand at painting their own rendition of his gorgeous painting!)

(i know it shouldn't have, but this sculpture made me laugh. It was of a very large woman and I told the girls, "At least, that makes me feel better about being seen on the beach in my bathing suit.")

(McKenna and her boyfriend, Murray, posed for me while Delaney and Scout acted difficult!)

(that was Salvadore Dali's signature. Pretty cool, huh?)

Art is absolutely fun!! If you have an art museum in your city, I would encourage you to go. They're usually free, and even the smaller ones will have some real treasures. And you'll be surprised that children will enjoy them too! (Even if they mostly notice naked people!)

I didn't know Birmingham had a museum. We live 2 hours from there, but hardly ever get over there. We usually go to Memphis or Jackson instead. B'ham is closer than those but family and other commitments take us the other directions. I will have to take my kids sometime. It sounds like you are having a busy summer.

And Sydney is too funny. (Naked people? well, dont we all kind of think that at museums? ha)

Nothin' wrong with "naked people" if it gets them interested in art. ::)

Beautiful! Do you know I have lived in Georgia since 1974 and I have only been to the art museum in Atlanta ONCE? And that was a high school field trip.

Ok, you've convinced me...I have got to take Jayla. I think we'll both enjoy it. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Cheryl...I know you don't know me, but I have an odd favor to ask. I was doing an internet search for Fleegle the stuffed frog because I had one in my early childhood years and still have him, though he's very old and worn. Anyway, I just had my first daughter and I would love to be able to find her the exact one. So I was simply wondering if you could give me any manufacturer's information that could help off of the tag. That would be awesome if you could. You can email me at sunshinemel@oneal.cfcoxmail.com . Thanks in advance!
