Softball with 4-year-olds

Just a real quick story...

Sydney has started practicing for her fall softball team. Gary is her coach, and we weren't even real sure how she was going to take to it. She's watched her sister play for years and, in fact, she was at the ballpark when she was three days old. (We have a picture of Gary walking the bases with her.)

I'm not sure if Sydney's going to be a ball player. So far, she's really good at singing songs at the top of her lungs while she's out in the field and I can tell she's gonna be a player-in-the-dirt. She's also good at yelling very loudly, "Daddy, where do I go?" and--oh my gosh!--you should see how small she is with that helmet on.

It must have something to do with her being my youngest, and also the fact that I've "been-there-done-that" with Delaney and softball for so many years...but all I can think of when I see her out there on the field is how so darned cute she is. I smile really big and I just encourage her and tell her how great she's doing (even though, the first night of practice, while the girls were standing around in the field just waiting for balls to come to them, she yelled out, "I don't want to do this anymore"; by the way, she changed her mind when she got busy doing something. Get her running the bases! Get her hitting the ball! Get her in the dugout where she can socialize with the girls!)

But, for someone whose only had two practices so far, she can hit the ball!

Last night, after she hit the ball both times she was up to bat (and like past the pitcher's circle), I went over to her and gave her a high-five. I said to her, "Boy, you sure can hit that ball. You must have been watching your sister all those years and now you know how to do it."

She just looked at me and shook her head and said, "Nope, it's my super powers."

----------------------------

(And, by the way...I totally did not plan on posting this post. But the super-power story was impossible not to share! My plan was to get online and post some scrappy creations I worked on yesterday. Yep, I scrapbooked! I did a couple of pages, and finished a mini album. And I'm working on several things today. So, I hope to pop on later today with some of my pages to share with everyone. Check back in later if you're interested in that sort of thing!)

OMG that super powers story is just too cute. I love it. Shawna (her birthday is today, come check out my blog and see her card) anyway, she used to stand in the outfield with her mitt over her face and looking around at everything. What a hoot...she was so NOT a softball player...but she rocked soccer. Love the story and can't wait to see some scrappy goodness.

Linda--You just never know with kids--what they'll like. Sydney's young still, so it's hard toknow. But, actually, she can hit the ball really well for being so little (she has a good stance and swing). But she likes to dance too! lol

Anon--It was! lol

Kathy--That is too funny!

Telah--With Sydney, you really never do know. She says the funniest things!

Rhonda--Yay!!! :-)

How fun to have our kids...what stories could we tell, if not for them saying the darnedest things?

As anxious as I am to see the scrapping, I LOVE that story. My personal opinion is that she is going to be the broadway star. DAnce and singing might just be her thing. She totally reminds me of my youngest.

I've been away for a few "fabulous" days and am enjoying catching up with you.

When my granddaughter played t-ball, her favorite part was the sunflower seeds. She got to eat them "just like Grandpa does". She'd even stop in the middle of base running to dig seeds out of her back pocket. She's get so darn bent out of shape when she'd get tagged out while doing that, too. lol
