I wish you all a wonderful 4th of July!!!!

I bought red, white, and blue t-shirts for the girls to wear for our July 4th celebrations today and Delaney's is a "Happy Bunny" shirt that proclaims, "Land of the free and home of the awesome." I think the t-shirt is actually supposed to be a little sardonically funny, perhaps joking a bit about we Americans' pride in ourselves (or maybe it's supposed to be serious, I'm not really sure).

Sure, we can be a little "full of ourselves" sometimes, and I'm not sure that the rest of the world thinks we're always so awesome. But, I'll tell you what....despite our flaws, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the world. The United States is truly a wonderful place to live...it is full of challenges, yet victories; diversity, and yet unity; setbacks, and yet progress; disagreements, and yet understanding of our differences.

Where else could I worship how I want to? go stand on a street corner and yell out my grievances against the government? write anything I want (whether stupid or brilliant) to the local newspaper? vote for anyone I want to vote for? get in a car and drive as far as I can possibly drive (well, until I run into Canada or Mexico)? petition, parade, or pray? (or choose to do none of the above, be totally ambivalent, and yet have the freedom to absolutely be that way?)

And, so, on this most American of holidays, I will celebrate this country I live in for its...

freedoms,
natural beauty,
people,
vastness,
faith,
history,
and
future.

And I will celebrate with...

homemade ice cream,
sports,
barbecued ribs,
brownies,
family,
friends,
and
fireworks
(and the maybe some watermelon).

And I will pray that you also...
have a wonderful day
(and that includes all of you non-Americans. Feel free to indulge in our awesomeness today! It's a day to celebrate!)

*And for some Fourth of July fun...go HERE to read up on the history of Independence Day, go HERE to play a virtual fireworks show, go HERE to get some yummy 4th of July recipes, go HERE to take a virtual "trip" to anywhere in the States, and go HERE to take the American citizenship test (I got an 80%; it's been awhile since I took civics class!!).

What a great post, Cheryl!

I took the test around the time my DIL was getting her citizenship, and I don't remember my score, but it surprised me because it was in the high 90s! I didn't realize I knew that much, but I guess when it is important, I hang onto it. I donno.

Happy 4th, if a bit belated!
