Random Tuesday . . .
A Christmas Get-to-Know You!!!

Well, I had pretty big plans for my post today. I was going to do a beautiful, awesome, amazing (or at least that's what it was in my mind!) scrapbook page based on the fun questionnaire I posted for today's Random Tuesday below. But, instead, yesterday . . . I got a killer headache (my head literally felt like it was swimming all day long, dizzy and yucky all afternoon and most of evening), I barely got anything done (I DID make supper and wash a gazillion loads of clothes--folding still to be accomplished!), and I just didn't feel like myself!

But last night I finally got this little questionnaire filled out (but it doesn't have all the bells-and-whistles that I'd planned for! sorry!) and I submit now to you as . . .

A Christmas Get-to-Know You!!

Submit your own answers, answer just one or two of them (I know it's kinda long), comment on my answers, or send us a link to your blog where you've done the quiz yourself.

I'd love to hear about all of your Christmas memories, traditions, and favorites! Here are mine . . .

1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? Absolutely hot chocolate! I also love hot cider!

2. Does "Santa" wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? Santa always just set the presents out under the tree when I was a child (nothing wrapped). Now he leaves presents in three different spots in the den for the girls.

3. Colored lights on tree/house or white? White on the “formal” tree in the living room; colored lights on the more “casual” live one in the den. No lights on the outside of the house (we tried two or three years, but Gary was risking his neck trying to get them up--we have a very high roof!)

4. Do you hang mistletoe? No (although McKenna said this year that we need to, just in case some boys drop by!)

5. When do you put your decorations up? Throughout the season, really, but the living room tree, the mantle decorations, and Christmas collections usually go up right after Thanksgiving. The live tree goes up whenever we find the time to go get the tree.

6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)? (Why can’t it be dessert? LOVE all those desserts—divinity, pies, decorated Christmas cookies!) I love all the casseroles! And I love Christmas breakfast!

7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child? I have a lot of different ones, but some I remember: We would travel each year to Texas during Christmas (from Fayetteville, Arkansas) and often spent Christmas Eve going from one grandparents’ house to the other. We’d sing Christmas carols to pass the hour’s time. Also—Mom and Dad would have 12 little “dollar” gifts for each of the days before Christmas and we’d get to open one up every morning. And—I remember the night Christopher tried to stay awake to see Santa (at Grandma and Grandpa Stuart’s), but he fell asleep.

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? I still believe!

9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? We let the girls open up their gifts from us on Christmas Eve, then Santa comes with the rest the next morning. (We do gifts with my parents on Christmas Eve morning and then with Gary’s parents on Christmas Eve night.)

10. How do you decorate your Christmas Tree? White lights, glass and silver/gold ornaments, and angel on top the artificial tree. Colored lights, more crafty ornaments, handmade ornaments, and star on top the live tree.

11. Snow! Love it or Dread it? Love it! I would love to see a White Christmas!

12. Can you ice skate? I tried and was awful at it!

13. Do you remember your favorite gift? Don’t really remember many specific ones from childhood, but I love all the gifts I get now. My parents and in-laws always get me great presents, and Gary is an Anti-Guy because he is a wonderful gift-buyer! I am spoiled!

14. What's the most exciting thing about the Holidays for you? I love finding just the right gift for each person! And I love celebrating the TRUE meaning of the season—Christ’s birth.

15. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert? (Ahh, there's the desserts!) Decorated sugar cookies, Mom’s chocolate pie

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? A couple—our family Advent celebrations at home, exchanging gifts with Gary late on Christmas Eve (all by ourselves!), the great stockings from Mom, going to get our tree, making homemade ornaments.

17. What tops your tree? An angel on one tree, star on the live one.

18. Which do you prefer: give or receive? I love them both!!

19. What is your favorite Christmas Song? “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” “Oh Holy Night”

20. Candy Canes? Not really. Give me something chocolate instead.

1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? Hot Chocolate or Hot Cider; Now growing up my grandmother made an Egg Nog like drink that we just called boiled custard. It was basically Egg Nog without the almond or amaretto flavoring. It was delicious!!

2. Does "Santa" wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? growing up, presents were just set out under the tree, in their original packages; still are today but everything is opened and assembled.

3. Colored lights on tree/house or white? White on the “formal” tree in the living room; colored lights on the more “casual” live one in the den. Outsidelights are white
4. Do you hang mistletoe? Yep! Get those kisses anyway I can. Mistletoe freaks Meg out, I'm not sure why.

5. When do you put your decorations up? As soon after Thanksgiving as possible

6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)? yeah, what's up with the dessert thing! Can't really think of anything. It's all about the desserts at Christmas.

7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child? Christmas eve with my family as a child, now with my inlaws. As a child, the journey to Tennessee to my grandparents house. All the wonderful food my Grandmother would make: the custard, coconut cake, roast beast (I'm drooling now). This was my Dad's family. My mom's mother lived two blocks from us. As she became older and had difficulty decorating for Christmas, I would go to her house and decorate her tree. We'd put on music and have a good time.

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? I AM SANTA CLAUS!

9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? We have a large get together at my wife's parents' house. Dinner and gifts are exchanged. At home they get new Christmas P.J.'s and maybe a gift. Then it's the main event in the a.m.

10. How do you decorate your Christmas Tree?
Normally on our living room tree we have white lights with glass and heirloom ornaments. In the den we would usually have a tree with colored lights and all the Disney/cartoon/superheroes and handmade decorations on it. However, this year we have some new additions to our family, two felines and one lop eared lagomorph (go look it up or read on). They are a rowdy bunch and to preserve our glass and breakable ornaments, we have only setup the living room tree but put on our ornaments from the den. The cats have climbed the tree only two or three times. However the rabbit has decided he is going to live under the tree. I feel sorry for him once Christmas is over. Gifts by the way are being placed on the dining room table instead of under the tree because the rabbit is fond of chewing on paper.

11. Snow! Love it or Dread it? A little of both actually.

12. Can you ice skate? never tried it, never will.

13. Do you remember your favorite gift? Star Wars, Micronauts and Shogun Warriors. All KINDS of outerspace battles happened in the living room, especially cool because it was before they outlawed missile firing weapons. OW MY EYE!!

14. What's the most exciting thing about the Holidays for you? The anticipation of it all. The celebration of the arrival of Jesus and Santa. The excitement in the air and the smiles of the children. My absolute favorite thing is getting to be Santa not just for my two kids but 100 or so underprivileged kids at our church's Christmas party. There are no words to convey how wonderful it really is and there is nothing to compare it to. I wish everyone could somehow experience this.

15. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert?
all of them

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition?
We're very basic. I keep saying I'm gonna do advent and I keep forgetting but we participate a lot at church. I think just being with family as much as possible decorating the house, and family Christmas Eve
17. What tops your tree? A star

18. Which do you prefer give or receive?
Giving, It's always difficult for me to put together a Christmas list of "things" I want.
19. What is your favorite Christmas Song? Golly, so many.
Traditional Hymns: "Silent Night" and "Joy to the World"

A little more modern: Anything by Bing Crosby, and Elvis singing "Here Comes Santa Claus"

Even more modern: Anything by Manheim Steamroller and some Trans-Syberian Orchestra

Feeling Wacky? Bob Rivers writes fantastic Christmas theme parodies, "I am Santa Claus" a parody of "I am Iron Man" or "All you need is Elves" a parody of The Beatles' "All you need is Love". He also did the popular, "Walking round in Women's Underwear" instead of "Walking in a Winter Wonderland"

20. Candy Canes? Yes as long as it's a standard peppermint candy cane!! Lately they've been selling bastardized Candy Canes in various flavors like fruit flavors, YUCK!!

Corrections:

#3: I don't know how I snuck the word "live" in there when talking about our den tree. We don't have live trees.

#9: The "they" that receive p.j.'s are my two girls.

1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? Hot Chocolate (and my new obsession, Pepperming Hot Chocolate from Starbucks)!

2. Does "Santa" wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? Santa always wrapped, except for the bike when I was eight that just had a huge bow on it.

3. Colored lights on tree/house or white? Colored lights on the tree, but small bulbs and never blinking. When we actually had a house in California for a few years we also did colored lights.

4. Do you hang mistletoe? No, never did (And I feel really old knowing that McKenna is saying that you need to in case boys drop by)

5. When do you put your decorations up? Usually within a week of Thanksgiving and they're up through New Year's Day.

6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)? I'm with you, BREAKFAST! Will usually whips up eggs, sausage, biscuts, white gravy... very Southern, which is impressive for a California boy.

7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child? Oh my. That must have been our first Christmas in Alabama, 1978. I was 10. We were sorta broke, and I knew that. So there were very few things under the tree. I had to go out to the storage closet to get a hammer and nails to hang up a picture I had gotten, and out on the balcony of our apartment was the hugest stocking I'd ever seen. I had to crawl inside of it to get everything out. It was really amazing!

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? I'm not sure when that myth got broken for me... but truly I still believe too!

9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? We're horrible about keeping secrets. We're lucky if they last under the tree until Christmas Eve.

11. Snow! Love it or Dread it? As stated recently in this blog... LOVE IT!

12. Can you ice skate? Yes, and do it often since I play hockey. But I also skate in Central Park a couple times during the witner.

14. What's the most exciting thing about the Holidays for you? I love all the sparkly lights all over the city.

15. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert? What's not a good holiday desert, seriously! Any and all.

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? Will and I always go visit the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree on Christmas Eve. We've done that every year we've been in NYC. This Christmas will be #9.

1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? Mmm, Hot Chocolate!!! Egg Nog?? (spitting and gagging sounds)
2. Does "Santa" wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? Santa wraps the presents. Santa has to make sure to use "special" wrapping paper that doesn't look exactly like Mommy's wrapping paper...
3. Colored lights on tree/house or white? Colored lights on the tree; white on the bushes/house.
4. Do you hang mistletoe? No...everyone knows mistletoe can be infested with nargles. (Okay, every geek who reads Harry Potter...)
5. When do you put your decorations up? As soon as possible, which is usually much later than everyone else on the block, who usually do it Thanksgiving weekend!
6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)? Stuffing. Mmmm. Okay, really, it's dessert...who's favorite thing is NOT dessert???
7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child? When I was growing up in Georgia, my street was full of kids, mostly girls. After we opened up our presents and did the family thing, we would all be outside playing with our new toys together. Also, my parents and I always went to (or were in) a Nativity play and would drive around and look at Christmas lights on other houses.
8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? Oooh, some mean older neighborhood kids. I remember that I was eight and my mom was FURIOUS.
9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? Jace is usually dying to open one, so we let him!
10. How do you decorate your Christmas Tree? Colored twinkle lights; miscellaneous ornaments (the older Jace gets, the more handmade ones show up), fiber optic angel at the top.
11. Snow! Love it or Dread it? Bah humbug! Okay, if it fell Christmas Eve, the kids could play in in Christmas day...and then it all magically vanished, I would love it.

13. Do you remember your favorite gift? Probably my skates (with racing wheels) in junior high.

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? The huge family get together/dinner/gift exchange.
17. What tops your tree? An angel
18. Which do you prefer give or receive? I love them both!!
19. What is your favorite Christmas Song? So many! We just watched Scrooged though so I will say Annie Lenox's "Put a Little Love in your Heart" Also, I love Adam Sandler's Hannukkah song...I guess that's not really a Christmas song, though, is it??
20. Candy Canes? Love candy canes. I always check the package...most candy canes come from Bob's, which is in Albany, Georgia and was only a couple miles from the house I lived in until I was four and we moved out to the 'burbs in Albany. :D
